The Celebration's centerpiece is honoring a person whose advocacy and training work model the way for quality legal services to low-income people.

Pauline Gee has dedicated herself to creating a just and caring society beginning in 1971 at legal Aid Society of Alameda County, through her work at California Rural Legal Assistance and now as a Deputy Attorney General. She has bettered the lives of countless people - by lessening and eliminating family violence, protecting consumers from rip-offs, removing barriers to productive employment, enabling students to get a quality education, and helping integrate immigrants, people of color and people with disabilities into the labor force and society at large.

Always on the cutting edge, Pauline pioneered domestic violence shelters, Temporary Restraining Order Clinics, and police officer training that serve as models for the entire country. Whether litigating cases, doing policy advocacy, or community legal education, she enrolls people from all facets of a community to forge lasting, workable solutions.

Using her training and leadership abilities, Pauline develops people by helping them build their strengths. Generous with her time and talent, she is as dedicated to justice, equality and empowerment in the office as she is in the courtroom. Recognizing the power of quality training, she has served as faculty at Benchmark training and is a trusted advisor.

Fostering collaboration and connection among people and groups, Pauline brings together differing viewpoints to work for the common good. A small sampling of her volunteer groups include: Asian Bar Association of Sacramento, California Commission on Access to Justice, California Judicial Council, California Women Lawyers, National Center for Women and Family Law, State Bar of California, Foundation of the State Bar of California, Yuba-Sutter Bar Association and Women in Legal Services.

Through her many accomplishments, Pauline continues to inspire and expand the capacity of hundreds of people to do extraordinary work for disenfranchised and low-income people.

Friends of Benchmark Institute joined Celebration 2002 for a conversational interview with Pauline conducted by Rosemary French.

Quilt Raffle This year's quilt, "Island Paradise", will be the fourth in the Courthouse Steps Quilt series. Created expressly for Benchmark's raffle, each quilt is numbered and signed by the artist, Marie Contreras.

Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5.

Courthouse Steps I - Won by Greg Bass, 1999
Courthouse Steps II "Fractured Diamonds" - Won by Amanda Wilson, 2000
Courthouse Steps III - won by Dara Schur, 2001.

"Courthouse Steps" is a traditional quilt block pattern. Marie chose it for it's obvious connection to our work. The completed quilt will be approximately 52" x 52." It's a great size to decorate a wall, to snuggle under on your favorite chair or to give to a baby, toddler, or anyone else you care about!
