honoring
Jane
Moran
|
The
Celebration's centerpiece is honoring a person whose advocacy
and training work model the way for quality legal services to
low-income people.
Jane Moran has devoted her life to protecting the most
vulnerable from abuse, violence and neglect. From her days as a VISTA volunteer
in Massachusetts and a lawyer with the Appalachian Research and Defense Fund to
her current sole practice in the Southern Appalachian coalfields, she has
focused on protecting abused and neglected children, furthering the cause of
workers, and defending low-income people accused of crimes.
A fierce advocate, Jane uses a wide variety of advocacy
strategies. A master trial lawyer and oral advocate, she has argued before the
United States Supreme Court and regularly appears before the West Virginia
Supreme Court and Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. She has organized tenant and
welfare rights groups and served as counsel to a citizen non-profit and
teachers’ association. She also chairs Mountain State Justice, a public interest
law firm focusing on welfare reform, environmental, prison, consumer, and
education issues.
An inspiring and generous teacher, Jane has taught in law
school and educational programs for lawyers, paralegals and judges. A core
faculty member at Benchmark Institute’s Trial & Hearing Skills Training since
1986, she has helped shape it into the only public interest training of its kind
and quality in the country.
Passionate about her work to eliminate violence, Jane has
been instrumental in drafting, enacting and enforcing laws providing for
domestic violence restraining orders and shelter funding, humane involuntary
commitment practices, and child focused abuse and neglect proceedings. She also
has served as an alternate Family Law Master and Mental Health Commissioner.
A tenacious advocate, Jane brings her best to each client,
doing whatever needs to be done — from the routine to the challenging. Whatever
the stakes, she chooses do the right thing regardless of how it affects her
personally. Practicing law for the good of the client and the good of us all,
Jane Moran continues to show the way.
Join us for a conversational interview with Jane conducted
by Rosemary French.

Can you believe it was 5-10-15 years
since you came to our training? We’re extending a special
invitation to alumni from 1998, 1993 and 1987-88. One of your
fellow alums will be contacting you. For our “oldest” alums,
Daphne Macklin (College of Advocacy 1987, Trial Skills 1988) has
an offer we hope you can’t refuse!
