College of Advocacy 2015, October 16–23

Welcome to the 25th Annual Legal Services College of Advocacy! We know that you will find the College a unique and enriching learning experience that will prove useful in your practice. The training begins today so make sure that you start right away on the assignments described below.

The College requires an enormous commitment of your time and energy. Throughout the training, you'll be working closely with other participants and trainers. In that spirit, please be on time for registration that begins at 1:45 p.m. on October 16 and plan to remain until the training concludes on October 23 at 1:00 p.m.  Please arrange your travel accordingly.

MCLE credit and certificates of completion cannot be awarded to participants who do not arrive on time and attend all sessions.

Training Schedule
The College begins with registration at Pajaro Dunes,
CY 20 on Friday, October 16 from 1:45 p.m.- 2:45 p.m. and ends on Friday, October 23 at 1:00 p.m. Except for the first two days, training sessions are scheduled from 9:00-Noon, 1:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00. Preparation in teams takes place outside scheduled sessions.

Training Design
The College is a highly participatory training that employs progressive state-of-the-art training techniques. It begins with assignments to complete before the face to face event. During the live training component you prepare for and practice several skills simulations. Trainers give individualized feedback on your preparation and skills.  You leave the training with a personal action plan for improving your skills.

The faculty, experienced legal services practitioners and trainers, act as coaches, demonstrate skills and create challenging learning environments where you are free to try new and different techniques and approaches to your work.

Assignments to be completed before October 16
Completing these assignments requires that you find information and do some serious reflection before the live event begins on October 16.

Assignment 2 will be discussed in the first small group session. For the sessions that follow, we'll assume that you have read and completed Assignments 1 and 3.

Get started now! Trust us — you can't save it for the plane or car ride — especially if you're driving.

1. Skills Assessment helps focus your learning at the training. We strongly encourage you to ask your supervisor and a trusted colleague to complete it for you as well.

2. Complete High Quality Services and Competence Questionnaires. High Quality Services Questionnaire gives you a picture of your organization and the client community that it serves. Annual reports, grant and refunding applications, executive directors, supervisors and other staff familiar with your organization are great resources. Competence Questionnaire asks how well your office is organized for competence and gives some ideas on best practices to move your office to a higher level of competence.

Prepare a two-minute presentation profiling your organization, highlighting the information that you collected in the High Quality Services and Competence Questionnaire. Write key points on flip chart paper to aid your presentation in your first small group session. Paper will be available at the training.

Personal Vision & Quality Service is the introductory exercise for the first afternoon small group session. Read through Developing Your Personal Vision first. Then complete the Personal Vision & Quality Services Worksheet (Items 1-7). We're asking you to present your preliminary thoughts on your personal vision — particularly for your work and your community at the first session.

This is a rewarding exercise — it does take time and thought.

3. Skill Overviews describe key concepts and skills that are demonstrated and practiced at the College.

The more practice, the better the learning. Past participants have said that given the intensity of the training, being able to read certain material ahead of time is quite helpful.
