Scholarships

The Board of Directors is pleased to announce the availability of the following scholarships to Benchmark's 21th Annual National College of Advocacy.

Alex Contreras Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1992 in memory of Alex Contreras (1914-1978). To qualify you must be a paralegal/advocate or legal assistant/secretary who is Latino/Latina or is providing services to the Latino community.

Benchmark Alumni Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1993 by Benchmark's Alumni to extend Benchmark's teaching-learning community and to further the dream of quality legal services for the client community.  It is open to all staff providing legal services to poor or other underrepresented people.

Grace and Porter Lines Scholarship
This scholarship was established in memory of Grace Johnson Lines (1906-1984) and W. Porter Lines (1907 - 1999).  It is open to all staff providing legal services to poor or other underrepresented people.  Preference will be given to paralegals/advocates, legal assistants/secretaries and African Americans.

Helen Barrett Perry Scholarship
"Can Shirley Come Out To Play, Mom?" Scholarship
This scholarship was established in memory of Helen Barrett Perry (1915-1997).  Preference will be given to advocates in community organizations who are advocating for poor or other underrepresented people.

Norma Bayes Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2005 to honor Norma Bayes who retired in December 2004 after over thirty years of service to the poor as an advocate in Washington State. It is open to paralegals and legal assistants providing services to poor or other underrepresented people, including underrepresented groups in environmental or health issues.  Preference will be given to advocates working in Washington State.

GUIDELINES
All applicants must:
    commit to completing all Training assignments
    commit to participating fully in the entire training including arriving on time and staying through the closing ceremony.

2.Scholarship Application: Complete and submit online.
3.Resume: Email to Marie@BenchmarkInstitute.org  
4.Cover letter: Optional. Email with your resume
5.Apply by Friday, September 5, 2008. We will not be able to consider applications submitted after that date.

We will only accept applications submitted electronically as described above -- no faxes or other hard copies.

You need not submit any payment now.  If you are awarded a scholarship, the balance of your fee will be due by September 19, 2008.

SELECTION
The Scholarship Committee gives preference to applicants from thinly financed organizations (with budgets of $1M or less) or where travel costs are a major expense. A limited number of the better qualified applicants may be contacted for a telephone interview.

All applicants will be notified of the Scholarship Committee's decisions.
