Online Exercises

Welcome! Public Benefits Overview on Dec 6–7 will be held at American Friends Service Committee, 65 Ninth Street, San Francisco 94103. Click here for directions, parking and nearby affordable lodging.

Both days of the training begin promptly at 8:30 a.m. and end at 5:30 p.m. Please arrive between 8:00 a.m. and 8:15 a.m. to receive your materials. Continental breakfast and lunch are provided for both days.

Public Benefits Overview (Thursday, December 4)
Please complete these exercises before the training. We will review this information at the beginning of the training.

Exercise 1
To get a quick overview of benefits, review
The People's Guide to Welfare, Health & Other Services. Then take a
Walk Through Food & Money, The Betty Hake Story and answer the questions. 

Exercise 2
Please read History and Administration of Public Benefit Programs, Ten Things Everyone Should Know about Welfare Reform, and Moving Beyond Welfare: What Do We Know About Former CalWORKs Recipients?

Exercise 3
Please answer the questions set out in Public Benefits Overview Introduction --Day One and bring it with you to the training.

Please complete these exercises before the training. We will review this information at the beginning of the training.

Exercise 1
Please read (or reread) History and Administration of Public Benefits Programs. At what step of the welfare cycle illustrated on page 1 would you place American society today?

Exercise 2
Please read our summary of Welfare Myths: Fact or Fiction? Exploring the Truth About Welfare (May 1996)

For extra credit read The Welfare Advocate's Challenge: Fighting Historic Racism in the New Welfare System.

Exercise 3
Please answer the questions set out in Public Benefits Overview Introduction -- Day Two and bring it with you to the training.
