Downloading Video
First things first -- The Player
Streaming Multimedia lets you hear or see continuous sound or video on the web.
To play streaming multimedia, you need a player like Windows Media Player. If
you haven't a clue whether you've got Windows Media Player, go ahead and click
on the icon below to download it. If you've already got the Player, you'll get
a message that tells you so. If you don't, you can go ahead and download it to
your computer.
Time is on your side…Yes it is.
Modem speed is measured in bits per second. How much time it takes for a video
segment to download depends on whether you have a high speed or regular modem
connection to the internet. Information transfer rate is measured in bits per
second (bps) or kilobits per second (kbps)
High Speed Connection or broadband
connection includes Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), high-speed digital phone line
service that transfers information at 1,000 to 9,000Kbps and Cable Modem, a
service like cable television that transfers information up to 4,000 Kbps.
Modem Connection or dial-up connection
transfer speed depends on modem speed, phone line quality and the rate at which
you are connected. Be sure that you connect at the highest speed you can -- 49
to 51bps is about the fastest we can get with a 56k modem. Go to "My
Computer" on Windows and check "Dial-up Networking" to see how
fast you're connected. If it's less than 49bps, keep trying. If you have a
28,800 bps or a 14,400 bps, downloading will take longer.
Patience If you have anything other than a
high-speed connection, you're going to have to wait. We know…this is a radical
suggestion these days. It's also an opportunity to practice patience. How about:
