Benchmark Learning Events 2009
Look to the left-hand column for locations and ballpark dates of
Benchmark events. In February, we’ll fill in the exact training
dates. Great learning, great faculty, great interaction!
2.
Support Staff Forum
January 22 San Francisco • January 29 Pasadena
Where would we be without our support staff? Pottersville! (For a
thirty second version of It’s A Wonderful Life, see the
result of George Bailey’s wish that he’d never been born
here.)
For the first time in a very long time,
Support Staff Forum 2009 brings together legal secretaries,
administrative assistants, receptionists, and other support staff to
enhance the ability to manage multiple priorities in a busy legal
services office or public interest law firm.
Be there and join the richest people in town!

Go to the Movies with Paul Newman
January 23 San Francisco • January 30 Pasadena
Trash that tired old audio tape handed down from the Ancient
Phoenicians and
Go to the Movies with Paul Newman!
Receive all six special credit units relevant to legal aid
and public interest practice. We’d love to see you pro bono
advocates as well.
For our second GTM cycle (2009-2011), we’ve collected clips from
movies of the remarkable Paul Newman. His flawed heroes and winning
antiheroes — from the lawyers in The Young Philadelphians and
the Verdict to the rebellious Cool Hand Luke and
Hombre, and others — provide perfect spark to discuss day-to-day
issues that arise in a public interest/legal services practice.
4.
Foreclosure Watch
Whatever your practice area, whatever your job, you need to know
something about what’s happening in the deluge known as
foreclosure and how it’s affecting our client communities.
Things are moving quite fast; so we’ve described new laws, loan
modification policies and programs and listed some resources —
materials and web presentations archived on the web.
Don’t be left behind.
5.
Free Stuff – MCLE, Publications, Law Student Internships
Here’s to
free stuff! Beware of free stuff! Whatever your
view, we’ve listed things that we’ve run across that you might find
useful — that one unit of ethics credit, for example. Continuing
Education of the Bar is offering one year free online access to most
of their publications to lawyers who’ve been practicing less than 5
years (and a 15 day free trial for those with more). Also the ABA is
offering a $2500 stipend for a law student working with the homeless
population this summer.

Student Loan Advocacy for Survivors of Domestic Violence
Thursday, January 15, 2009 PST 10a.m. – 11:30a.m. — Free
Whatever your practice area, whatever your job, you need to know
what to do and where to go when a client’s $153 weekly paycheck,
retirement or disability check gets garnished because of a student
loan to pay for the education to nowhere. This teleconference
describes steps to reduce payments and restore eligibility for
student loans so that clients may improve employability and
financial independence.
Register by January 11, 2009.
